Entry Requirements for the Dominican Republic
Most travelers, including those from the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, the European Union, Russia, Ukraine, Kazakhstan, Mexico, many South American and Central American countries, Japan, and Israel, do not require a visa to enter the Dominican Republic.
Requirements for Tourists Entering the Dominican Republic
Foreigners visiting the Dominican Republic as tourists must meet the following conditions:
- A passport valid for at least six (6) months.
- A round-trip or onward ticket (air, sea, or land).
- A confirmed address in the Dominican Republic.
- Sufficient financial means to cover expenses during their stay.
Temporary Passport Validity Measures (December 1, 2024 – November 30, 2025)
Special Provisions for Certain Nationalities
Nationals of the European Union, the United Kingdom, Canada, the United States, Brazil, Chile, Argentina, Colombia, and Ecuador traveling solely for tourism may enter the Dominican Republic with a valid passport, even if it expires during their stay. This measure is in effect from December 1, 2024, to November 30, 2025.
Exemptions for Diplomatic and International Officials
The following individuals are exempt from standard entry requirements under reciprocal agreements:
- Accredited diplomats and consular officials in the Dominican Republic, along with their family members.
- Representatives of permanent missions or delegations to intergovernmental organizations based in the Dominican Republic.
- Officials of international organizations headquartered in the country and their dependents.
Exceptions for U.S. Nationals with Special Circumstances
The Director General of Migration may authorize entry for U.S. citizens who do not meet standard requirements in cases involving humanitarian concerns, public interest, or international commitments. Such authorizations are granted on a case-by-case basis and do not set a legal precedent.
Special Provision for Cuban Nationals Residing in the U.S.
Cuban citizens who legally reside in the United States may enter the Dominican Republic as tourists with an expired passport (up to 24 months), provided they hold a valid U.S. Permanent Resident Card (“Green Card”). This measure has been in effect since June 1, 2023, and remains indefinite.
Airline Compliance with Entry Rules
The General Directorate of Migration requires airlines operating in the Dominican Republic to adhere to these entry provisions. Airlines must ensure that passengers meet the nationality and travel purpose requirements before boarding.
Dominican Citizens Returning to the Country
These provisions do not apply to Dominican nationals holding a Dominican passport when returning to the Dominican Republic.
Round-Trip Ticket Requirement
As of April 28, 2023, all foreign travelers must present proof of a round-trip ticket when checking in for their flight to the Dominican Republic. This requirement does not apply to Dominican nationals or foreign residents of the Dominican Republic. Airlines are responsible for enforcing this rule, and failure to do so may result in penalties.
E-Ticket Requirement
All travelers (foreign and Dominican) must complete an electronic entry and exit form at https://eticket.migracion.gob.do before arrival at the airline counter.
- The form can be filled out as soon as flight details are available.
- Families traveling together only need one form for up to seven members.
- Travelers should print or screenshot their QR code confirmation.
- Changes to the form can be made using the issued application code.
- Private flight and non-commercial sea travelers do not need to complete the form and may use physical customs and immigration forms instead.
Extending Your Stay
Tourists staying beyond 30 days must pay an additional fee upon departure, calculated based on the length of their extended stay. Fees can be paid online or at the airport immigration office before departure. More details here.
Visa Information
The Dominican Republic offers tourist, business, work, student, and residency visas. Travelers from any country can enter without a visa if they hold a valid visa from the U.S., Canada, the U.K., or a Schengen country.
Those not eligible for visa-free entry must apply for a visa, requiring a passport with at least six (6) months’ validity. Visa applications are processed by the Dominican Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Check visa requirements here.

Customs Regulations
Visitors may bring the following duty-free items:
- Up to 20 packs of cigarettes, 25 cigars, or 200 grams of tobacco.
- Up to three (3) liters of alcoholic beverages.
- Gifts valued at up to $500 USD (once every three months).
- Prescription medications for personal use (with documentation for controlled substances).

Yellow Fever Vaccine Requirement
Travelers from Brazil
Passengers arriving from the Brazilian states of Espírito Santo, Minas Gerais, Rio de Janeiro, or São Paulo must present proof of yellow fever vaccination at least 10 days before arrival.
Exemptions:
- Infants under 10 months.
- Pregnant women.
- Transit passengers (staying under 12 hours in Brazil).
- Those with medical exemptions (must provide a doctor’s certificate).
Travelers from Venezuela
As of October 15, 2021, all travelers (aged 1 or older) arriving from Venezuela—including those who have transited through Venezuela within the past 14 days—must provide proof of yellow fever vaccination.
Travel Restrictions Due to Marburg Virus
As of February 21, 2023, entry is suspended for passengers and crew arriving from Equatorial Guinea due to a Marburg virus outbreak. This applies to:
- Travelers coming directly from Equatorial Guinea.
- Those who have visited Equatorial Guinea since February 8, 2023.
- Transit passengers and minors.
